Willi Kunz is one of my favorite designers ev-ur. His straight-forward, yet expressive typography is some of the best on this side of the pond. Through my frequent Googling of his name I discovered a blog that linked to an assortment of his posters that are in the permanent collections at the MoMA .
Not bad, even if he was a Buckeye for a while.
I think Santa might finally be bringing me Macro+Microaesthetics this year. I’ve wanted it for at least two years and I think I might even try reading it instead of just looking at the pictures. Maybe. Yes, I am a geek.
I am constantly searching for good books on corporate identity or logos. As you may know, if you’ve looked into it, most of the books from the past 20 years have been atrocious. A celebration of the menial filled with visual pollution, everything looks dated a couple years later. Today I found the book of all books though – “American Trademark Designs: A Survey with 732 Marks, Logos and Corporate-Identity Symbols”.
Of course it’s from 1976 but that’s what makes it so great. Actually I think you could officially just copy any of the things in the book since it’s so old and by now the identity has been unnecessarily redesigned 100 times. It even has the original Mortin Salt Girl and Saul Bass’ great original mark for AT&T. Basically just a good source of inspiration back when identities really were solid and unique.
