Work Machine.

I’m going to be on a bit of a hiatus for a hot minute while I bust some indesign skills. Work plus freelance is totally eating up some precious interwebbing time, good thing I dropped the teaching this semester. I promise to return ASAP with all kinds of new visual crap for both of you reading this blog.

During the drought I will post two videos for you to ponder. The first from the genius that is Goldfrapp with A&E from Seventh Tree – which by the way is like old school Goldfrapp and pretty mellow and chill. The second is a short preview of Björk’s Wanderlust from Volta. I’m still kicking myself for not going to the premiere a couple weeks ago. Bjork was even there damn it. That would have been totally worth it. Then you can check out some of the screen grabs from the full video.

The Brawny Man seems to be losing his strength, though he has been invigorated by a powerful drop-shadowed gradated thingie that is obviously stronger than him. Kind of interesting that they completely did away with the old logo and the revision of it which were part of the rebranding a few years ago. I guess Brawney is super-absorbent of its own logos. I have to say that I am still a fan of the 70 porn star model better – I think it’s the ’stache. Brawney man was a pimp smoking Marlboro Reds before he got all prettified.

What Have You Done for Me Lately?

Because I’m riding my Janet high these days here’s the video for Rock With U by Saam. Done in several takes but fused together seamlessly it’s all dancey and I’ve got to love that. The look of the dancers was based on the Blitz Kids. And drag queens in a video? What more could you ask for. If only RuPaul would have shown up it would have just been the icing on the cake.

Saam’s official site. The MJ video is kind of weird since he’s been working with Janet. And ok, I get my Janet fix from Janet-Xone but don’t we all have dirty little secrets? I’m not going to tell you my log-in name or how many posts I have. Let’s just say it’s kind of embarrassing to be referred to as a “Xoneologist”. I think I’ve said too much now.

These items were discovered in Surface, issue 70. I thought they were the most interesting forms of “visual communication”, or something like that.

At a show combining the talents of design firms Bloom and Bleed, tattoo-like graphics were affixed to iconic Kartell pieces. kartell.it, bloommiami.com, bleed.no. (Kind of love the bleed site in a heroin chic kind of way).

Relive the Matrix trilogy with these Mayer H.-designed tiles of interlocked numerals, available in green, red, and black. Available at Bisazza.

…the illuminated sculptures of Brooklyn-based Jason Rogenes are made from clusters of styrofoam packaging that once cushioned computers and appliances and were salvaged from the trash heaps of New York City. Each tolemic work contains fluorescent lighting – using ordinary T8 bulbs or 8-foot tubes – and is either suspended from the ceiling or plugged into an outlet like an oversized nightlight.

Is That Madge Rounded?

Actually I think it’s called VAG Rounded but it reminds me of something else which makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. I’m sure there is some reasoning behind the name VAG somewhere. Well this little gem came from my good friend Michael K. of dlisted, which I am still obsessed with.

fug12.jpg

“It took them 30 seconds to find two separate stock photos of Madge and Justin Timberdouche. It took them another 30 to paste them together. It took a full minute to find the font. The rest of the two minutes was spent airbrushing Madge’s face. It probably cost the label a whopping buck fifty. Budget cover.”

It’s been a great week for cd covers with Ash and all, and I can’t wait to see what comes out next. You’ve got to love the Photoshop Photocopy effect on Madge’s boots and the drop-shadow under JT’s feet, to add character you know. There’s also something really unhealthy going on with her right arm which makes her hand look even weirder, kind of reminds me of this.

I can’t wait to see who she beats down with those big hands.

Update: Here is the cd cover for the album. It seems that crappy single cover was part of a series. Definitely revoking the designer license for this offense.

I had never seen the video for Beck’s Timebomb, probably because it’s nearly impossible to see any music videos anywhere. The song was released last year and it’s quite catchy but the video completely changed the meaning of the upbeat, happy song. Quite interesting visually with a thought-provoking message.

Artwork used throughout is by Chris Jordan.

If DC Comics Designed a CD Cover.

I certainly hope that DC Comics would even come up with something better than this mess. Is this even real? I guess it is. Poor Ashlee Simpson, not sure where she fits in musically, and obviously not sure where she fits in visually. You know it’s bad when non-designers even have a comment on it, this one from Michael K. from my daily obsession, dlisted.

“That font should only be allowed on the cover of a Schoolhouse Rock album and nowhere else. It looks like an avatar one of her two fans would make using MSPaint while on a NyQuil high. Seriously, her fans probably think a NyQuil high is hardcore.”

Oh Michael K. you are the reason why I laugh every day, you are the reason I check your site compulsive every hour, you are the wind beneath my wings. And because of this atrocity I have even added a new category to the roster.

Marius was nice enough to send along this little link… what would happen if Saul Bass designed the opening credits to Star Wars.

Since we aren’t fortunate enough to have Universal Health Care in this country you have to settle with what you can get. For many of us this means VSP, which offers discounted services on eyecare. They recently unveiled a new logo, a much needed update. I’m glad they finally let the little man free, but I’m not sure why they replaced him with two orbs.
